They and other members of their family gathered with the other religious leaders to question Peter and John ( Acts 4:5-14). Acts 4:4 records that the number of believers (only counting the men) rose to 5,000.Ĭaiaphas was actually the High Priest at this time but his father-in-law, Annas, still held the honorary title. They had Peter and John put in jail overnight.Įven while Peter and John were in jail the people must have been considering what they had said. To top it off some leaders, the Sadducees, didn’t even believe in resurrection and that was a major part of what Peter was preaching. They must have been frustrated because they thought they had taken care of this “Jesus problem” earlier when they played a leading part in his crucifixion. This was not the message that the religious leaders wanted the people to hear. It was always in God’s plan for His people to accept Jesus as their true king. ![]() His sermon was much like his earlier one (Sermon on Pentecost). When the crowd gathered Peter took the opportunity to preach. It became a gathering place for believers. The apostles would eventually perform many miracles at Solomon’s Colonnade. Peter and John must have thought back to Jesus and about how he once stood in this very place (Solomon’s Colonnade: John 10:22-24 and Acts 3:11) and said that the miracles he did in his Father’s name spoke for themselves ( John 10:25-30). The people had seen this man many times so they realised what an amazing miracle this was and wanted to hear more. Upon being healed the man did not praise Peter and John but God himself (3:8) because he knew where the power had come from. It is God who turned this event into a wonderful opportunity to preach to many people. Later, Peter recalled it an “act of kindness” on the part of the apostles. They were most probably on their way to join in the afternoon prayer time or possibly just trying to connect with more people in the temple area to tell them about Jesus. Healing this man was most probably not on Peter and John’s “to do” list for their day. ![]() When he asked for money he must not have even been looking up because Peter had to get his attention and tell him to look at him while he talked ( Acts 3:1-5). ![]() Years of begging must have made this man feel dejected and disengaged. He had been crippled since birth ( Acts 3:2) and was over 40 years old ( Acts 4:22). The man in this story was carried by someone and put at the temple gate each day to beg from those entering the temple courts. In today’s story we learn more about the types of things that happened to the apostles as they went about the business of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ with everyone around them.īeing disabled in the first century meant total dependence on family and friends. It seems many who had come for the feast continued to stay on in Jerusalem to have fellowship with other new believers and to learn more from the apostles ( The First Church). This popular menu item traditionally incorporates celery, onion, and thin noodles in a starchy sauce touched by soy sauce. This means you’ll want to carefully choose a scene that you’ll feel fulfilled putting together or at least want to see through to the end. Of course, you’ll want to make sure the puzzle is appealing enough to keep your attention through several hours of assembly. It also helps to get a puzzle made of a durable material that won’t fray and make it harder to securely lock the pieces together. On the other hand, small puzzle pieces that come in similar shapes increase the puzzle’s difficulty level. You’ll find that clearly unique shapes and larger pieces lead to an easier assembly experience. Plus, you’ll want to look at the puzzle piece size and shapes. A puzzle with more varied colors will simplify the sorting process and can save you from more frustration. If the puzzle has many similar colors, this can make it harder to locate the right pieces as can a puzzle where a lot of elements blend together. You might find it easier to assemble a puzzle featuring your favorite movie character or piece of artwork than a detailed waterfall scene in nature. You’ll also want to consider how complex and familiar the puzzle design is. However, it could take anywhere from nine to 19 hours to finish one of these. Puzzles with 1,000 pieces or more provide a good challenge even for experienced puzzlers. If you’re somewhat experienced, you may find 500- to 750-piece puzzles a reasonable option that can take four hours or longer to complete. Blunt remains one of Hollywood’s most reliably interesting action performers, swinging between the extremes of vulnerability and boldness that make perfect sense for a terrified, bereaved mother of three. I’m reluctant to reveal many details since suspense is so vital to a film like this, but there’s plenty else of note. ![]() Soon we jump forward in time, to the moments after A Quiet Place ended, and pick up the story from there. Krasinski returns to this sequel as director and sole writer (he co-wrote the first film), and he has a good sense of how to build tension in what we’re seeing and what we’re hearing. The opening sequences of A Quiet Place Part II feel obviously influenced by Spielbergian visions of apocalyptic catastrophe (there are echoes of War of the Worlds everywhere). Suddenly, fireballs from the sky crash onto the field, and havoc breaks loose. Nearby on the bleachers, gruff neighbor Emmett (Cillian Murphy) hangs onto his radio and watches his kids play. Evelyn (Blunt) and Lee (Krasinski) keep tabs on their three kids: daring Regan (Millicent Simmonds), who is deaf timid Marcus (Noah Jupe), swinging away at home plate and curious Beau (Dean Woodward), hanging onto the fence and watching his big brother play. On day one of the rest of their lives - not in a good way - the Abbott family are in their quiet New England hamlet with their neighbors, watching a Little League baseball game. It’s sincere and bittersweet, and it clearly tapped into something that moved audiences.Īnd, for the most part, it does. ![]() And I think that’s why it was such a hit: It delivers some excellent jump scares and whittles down a common theme in horror - keeping your kids alive in a world that’s trying to kill them - to its essence. It’s a remarkably restrained film, mostly taking place over the course of one day, filling in only the barest background details, and letting us focus singularly on the terror of staying alive, and protecting vulnerable children, too. The world outside their home is stalked by alien-monsters who are triggered into murderous rage by noise of any kind. The premise is simple: A family of five lives alone in the woods. Setting aside its star power (namely, Emily Blunt and John Krasinski), it was not obviously poised for success more than any other horror film. When A Quiet Place appeared in theaters in April 2018, it was a worldwide smash hit, and I’ve spent a while since then trying to figure out why. ![]() ![]() ![]() Is there any equivalence however between the Stalinist Soviet Union’s conduct and Socialist China’s today? Don’t the drivers of China’s external conduct point, in fact, to a different set of outcomes? And which, in turn, should point towards a different set of ideas and strategies to cope with China?Ĭomparing Kennan’s Soviet Union to present-day China The State Department paper may make for interesting reading. Kennan had ascribed Soviet conduct, too, to its despotic Tsarist inheritance, with Marxism-Leninism serving as a moral and intellectual fig leaf. Like Kennan, the State Department authors reach back to China’s behavioral drivers in the pre-1911 imperial era: “The defining component of China’s conduct” derives from the Party’s “hyper-nationalist convictions” which are “not drawn from the Marxist-Leninist playbook”, the authors argue, but from traditional Chinese thought as well as its 21 st century model of authoritarian governance and economic dependency-creation around the world. response, based on the supposed motives of the Chinese Communist Party. Like Kennan, the State Department paper sets out an all-encompassing U.S. The most notable of these attempts is a 72-page document, The Elements of the China Challenge (with a key chapter titled The Intellectual Sources of China’s Conduct ), authored by the Trump administration’s State Department in November 2020. Its brevity, insight and rigor were irresistible and ‘containment’ effectively became the geopolitical doctrine of the Cold War age.Īgainst the backdrop of the meteoric geopolitical rise of China and the significant deterioration of U.S.-China ties, many commentators have tried to write the Chinese equivalent of The Long Telegram. Kennan did not intend the essay to be a comprehensive statement of national strategy but it quickly became one. Is there any equivalence however between the Stalinist Soviet Union’s conduct and Socialist China’s today? Boxed within its limited geographic sphere of influence, the innate deficiencies of the Soviet polity would in time weaken its own national potential and cripple the governing regime. The Kremlin was uniquely attentive, Kennan argued, to the underlying cost-benefit equation of its revolutionary adventures overseas. In it, Kennan advised his countrymen to implement a long-term policy that was designed to confront “Russian expansive tendencies … with unalterable counter-force at every point where they show signs of encroaching upon the interests of a peaceful and stable world”. The word ‘containment’ would enter the lexicon later in Kennan’s 1947 essay, The Sources of Soviet Conduct. ![]() Rather, America needed to remain self-confident and true to its values, relate to Moscow without fear or favor, and offer a constructive vision of an alternative world that people would prefer to live and prosper within. With such an insecurity-ridden regime that was determined to engage in a “patient and deadly struggle for total destruction of a rival power” to mask its internal weaknesses, good relations were impossible. The Stalinist dictatorship, in Kennan’s view, was only the latest in a “long succession of cruel and wasteful Russian rulers who ha relentlessly forced country on to ever newer heights of military power in order to guarantee external security of their internally weak regimes”. The Long Telegram, as it came to be famously known, was succinct and hard-hitting. It instantly struck a chord in Washington as the administration grappled to come to terms with the Soviet Union’s intransigent ways in the aftermath of World War II. The telegram contained his deduction of the philosophical and conceptual drivers of the post-War Stalinist worldview. SUGGESTED READING Huawei and the Great Decoupling By Nigel Inkster75 years ago, a young American diplomat in Moscow by the name of George Kennan dispatched a 5,300-word telegram to his superiors in which he set out practical suggestions for future U.S. Proxy wars and military threats will not work with China, especially now America is no longer at the top, writes Sourbah Gupta.
